Christopher John Cheney (born 2 January 1975) is a prominent Australian rock musician, singer, songwriter, and record producer. Best known as the founding guitarist and lead vocalist of the multi-platinum rockabilly-punk band The Living End, Cheney formed the group in Melbourne in 1994 alongside schoolmate Scott Owen. Inspired early on by bands like AC/DC and the Stray Cats, Cheney quickly established himself as one of Australia’s most dynamic guitarists and primary songwriters. Under Cheney's creative leadership, The Living End achieved massive commercial success, beginning with their breakthrough 1997 EP Second Solution / Prisoner of Society, which became the highest-selling Australian single of the 1990s. He went on to pen a string of Top 20 hits for the band, including "All Torn Down," "Roll On," and "White Noise," the latter earning him the prestigious APRA Song of the Year award in 2009. Beyond his main band, Cheney has contributed to the Australian music landscape by fronting the all-star supergroup The Wrights and collaborating with major international acts like Green Day. In addition to his band work, Cheney is a co-owner of the Melbourne recording studio Red Door Sounds, which he opened in 2010. After spending a decade living and writing music in Los Angeles, he returned to Australia and expanded his artistic horizons by launching a solo career. He released his critically acclaimed debut solo album, The Storm Before the Calm, in 2022, accompanied by a national tour.
